Ceramic Figures

Foreword

In addition to 2D art, I have also dabbled in ceramics.  I own a small kiln and a lot of clay, but I've not actually used either for a number of years, so everything displayed on this page is rather old.  I hope to make some new, better pieces eventually, but time is not always so permitting.

Gabumon

Gabumon is the most "recent" (despite that still meaning "years ago"), most accurate and the one figure I consider to be the cream of the crop of what I've made so far (so he gets to be first on the page) ^^;  And that's all I've got to say about this one.  I'm hoping to make some more of my favorite Digimon later on...

Venusaur

Now, I've seen different renditions of Venusaur in which his body is more of a dark blue color, but there's also official art in which he's this light teal color, which I prefer, so I chose that one. I realized later that his pupils aren't black, but, oh well. As for the red on his tongue and his back, you'll notice it looks kind of "dirty" in some places. This is because red is not a friendly color in ceramics (maybe not all types of ceramics, I'm no expert). It doesn't react to the heat in the same way that other colors do, so you have to deal with it separately. In any case, my red always burns and comes out with charred patches here and there. If I wanted to, I suppose I could investigate and/or experiment to get it to work correctly, but I kind of like the "dirty" look of it ^^;

Flareon

As noted in the previous paragraph, the red coloring always has issues. I took great care when painting Flareon's ears, to make sure the edges between black and red were well-defined. Well, and then I fired it, and the red had melted into the black areas -_-; It also melted on the borders between the red and yellow, but those looked more "natural" since the yellow's supposed to be fuzzy anyway. In general, I like how this one came out; it's relatively simple, but it looks "correct." ^^;

Gomamon

Gomamon is mostly okay, except that his face looks rather goofy ^^; Like with Flareon, although I was careful painting the red, it melted down and spilled onto his head a little further and sloppier than the edge that I painted. Also, there were some black specs around his eyes that came from scratching their edges (to make the lines cleaner) that I didn't notice before glazing it (and glaze makes everything bright and shiny, including little specs that shouldn't be there).

Cyndaquil

Perhaps I should've mentioned earlier, but I'd like to note how all of these figures were made prior to the release of their corresponding version - by which I mean, the original Stadium with regards to Venusaur, and Stadium 2 for the GS-generation ones - of Pokemon Stadium (which is relevant because 3D models are easier to design figures from than 2D drawings or itty bitty Gameboy icons) ^^;

That being said, Cyndaquil got to be a bit taller than he "should" be. Also, prior to Stadium 2, I'd never seen him without the flames protruding from his back... Though, even if I had known he could withdraw them, that'd be boring and I still would've done it this way :Þ

Chikorita

Another case of "what color is it supposed to be, anyway?" Stadium 2 has its body a light green color, but all of the pictures I'd seen before then were this beige color. The body shape is also a bit off with regards to the Stadium model. Oh well ^^;

Totodile

Yet again, a color dispute ^^; Pictures I'd seen prior to Stadium 2 always looked like a light blue, whereas Stadium colored him a more medium blue. I also thought at the time that the yellow marking on his stomach had mass to it. And he should have more teeth... Once again, oh well ^^;

Marril

Marril doesn't balance well; give it a slight poke and he rolls backward. He doesn't fall over though, since his tail stops him and makes it look like he's sitting back with his feet up (see third picture on the right) and the position is intentional ^^; This one of course was the easiest to make since he's mostly made up of simple spheres ^^;
